Established in 2015

Leisure Timber and Hardware was established in 2015 by two friends, Stephen Jones and Jeff Russell, who wanted to be the “masters of their own destiny”. They knew their extensive and complementary experiences would be the perfect mix to develop a successful customer-focused business in the outdoor timber and hardware market.

Our timber yard on a well located corner in Lilydale was secured and we set about refurbishing the shop and preparing the yard. After a year of using racked-out shipping containers to temporarily store and secure our timber, the current purpose-built 6-bay shed was built. The new shed enabled us to increase our product and stock offering and provided much-needed weather protection.

We carried on through the pandemic battling lockdowns, work restrictions, timber supply shortages and continual material cost fluctuations. Focusing on helping our customers to keep their businesses going, we also made sure our own staff were able to keep working with minimal disruption.

Progressively we purchased additional machinery and vehicles and engaged additional staff, now celebrating 10 years old – still striving to grow and prosper.

Our Timber Expert – Stephen Jones

Stephen Jones (Jonesy) has been working in the Timber Industry since 1986. He began working at Tremont Timber in Bayswater, and worked through a range of roles, from packing OBHW house lots in the yard in the middle of winter, to a “counter jumper” serving builders and home handymen at the sales counter.

Stephen progressed to working as a builders’ rep on the road and as a wholesale timber representative, selling timber from sawmills and importers to timber merchants throughout Victoria.

For 22 years, Stephen was the manager of a leading timber and hardware business where he built his reputation as a “can do” person, focusing on making sure the customer’s needs are met. During this time, Stephen won a Recognition of Excellence award from the Timber Merchants Association as “Employee of the Year,” which involved nominees from timber industry businesses throughout Victoria.

In 2015, Stephen realised his life-long goal of owning and operating his own timber sales business, founding Leisure Timber and Hardware. Leisure Timber supplies high quality products from reputable sawmills, importers and wholesalers, who have built up a rapport with Stephen over his 39 years in the timber industry.

Stephen taps into his vast industry experience in outdoor timber and hardware to service a range of clients including professional fencing contractors, landscapers, decking and pergola builders through to home DIY projects.
